Collective Action for the Rehabilitation of Global Public Goods in the CGIAR Genetic Resources System: Phase 2 (GPG2)

The project entitled “Collective Action for the Rehabilitation of Global Public Goods in the CGIAR Genetic Resources System: Phase 2” (GPG2) directly contributed to the CGIAR System Research Priority 1: Sustaining Biodiversity for Current and Future Generations. The 3-year project (2007-2010), funded by the World Bank and coordinated by SGRP on behalf of the CGIAR Centres, had the following objectives:

  1. upgrade the CGIAR Centre genebanks and their standards of management
  2. ensure genebank efficiency and sustainability into the future
  3. strengthen capacity for collective action on genetic resources within the CGIAR
  4. facilitate access to the in-trust collections by users and
  5. position Centres to play a leading role in building a comprehensive global system for conserving, managing and exchanging Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (PGRFA).

Project Vision

  • The vision of the project is that, upon its completion, the CGIAR in-trust collections will have a financial and technical basis for long-term, sustainable and accessible stewardship of the valuable public goods that they represent, with the CGIAR exercising leadership in a collective effort with other international organizations and NARS to build an effective global system for the conservation and use of crop diversity.

Development Goal

  • Crop genetic resources and associated biodiversity are put to use in developing countries to fight poverty, enhance food security and health, and protect the environment.

Intermediate Goal

  • Creation of a comprehensive, effective and sustainable global conservation and use system.

Project Purpose

  • The CGIAR Centres achieve effective stewardship of their in-trust collections and provide leadership to partners in developing a global crop-based conservation and use system.
